## Electromagnet

• An electromagnet is a temporary magnet that is created when a current is induced in the coil of wire wound round a core.
• It consists of an insulated copper wire in the form a coil (conductor) that is wound round a soft iron piece (core).
• The strength of an electromagnet depends on the number of turns in its coil and the amount of current passed through the coil.

## Direction of force – Fleming’s left-hand Rule

A current carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field experiences a force and the direction of this force can be determined using the Fleming’s left-hand rule.   As per Fleming’s left-hand rule, the magnetic force is perpendicular to both the direction of the current as well as the direction of the magnetic field.

In other words, if the direction of the field and that of the current are perpendicular to each other, then the force acting on the conductor will be perpendicular to both.

## Faraday’s Laws of Electromagnetic Induction

• Whenever there is a change in the magnetic flux linked with a coil, an emf is induced, which is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linked with the coil.
• Induced emf = (Change in the magnetic flux) / (Time in which the magnetic flux changes).
• Thus, induced emf depends on the change in magnetic flux and the time in which the magnetic flux changes.
