PREPOSITIONS

 

DEFINITION

 

Words which shows the relation between two things.  A Preposition is a word used with a noun or a pronoun to show how the person or thing denoted by the noun or pronoun stands in relation to something else.

A Preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun (object/person) in a sentence to show its relation with another is known as PREPOSITIONS.

Example:

The lion was standing near the well.

The Taj Mahal is situated on the banks of the river Yamuna

 

 

TYPES OF PREPOSITIONS

 

  1. Time: SHOWS WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS

These Prepositions are used to refer to time in various aspects. (Eg- by, in, an, at, after, before, from, since, during, etc.)

Example:
He reached at eight o’clock in the morning.

  1. Place: show WHERE something HAPPENS
    (On, at, in, by, from, to, towards, up, down, across, between, among, through, in front of, behind, above, over, under, below, etc.)
    eg-Sam was sitting under a tree.

 

  1. Prepositions of Directionshow WHERE something is GOING

Preposition like to, towards, through, into are used to describe the direction.

(On, at, in, by, from, to, towards, up, down, across, between, among, through, in front of, behind, above, over, under, below, etc.)

Example:

The man was walking his dog along the riverbank.
The football rolled down the hill.

  1. Prepositions of Agent: These prepositions act as an agent between a noun and usually a verb.

(at, for, in, off, on, over, by and under)

Eg:   Harry Potter was written by J.K Rowling.
