## What is Polynomial in one variable?

Polynomials in one variable are algebraic expressions that consist terms in the form ax^{n }where n is a non-negative (i.e. positive or zero) integer and ‘a’ is a real number and is called the coefficient of the term. The degree of a polynomial in one variable is the largest exponent in the polynomial.

### Degree of a Polynomial

The exponent of the term with the highest power is called the degree of the polynomial. The degree of a non-zero constant polynomial is zero. The degree of the zero polynomial is not defined.

#### Types of Polynomial

A polynomial is named according to the degree of the polynomial.

**Linear Polynomial:**

A polynomial of degree one is called a first-degree or linear polynomial. The general form of a linear polynomial is ax + b, where a ≠ 0. Maximum number of terms of a linear polynomial is two.

**Quadratic Polynomial:**

A polynomial of degree two is called a second degree or quadratic polynomial. The general form of a quadratic polynomial is ax^{2} + bx + c, where a ≠ 0.

**Cubic Polynomial:**

A polynomial of degree three is called a third-degree or cubic polynomial. The general form of a cubic polynomial is ax3 + bx2 + cx + d, where a ≠ 0.
