Chemical effects of electric current
The passage of an electric current through a conducting solution causes a chemical reaction. It may cause the formation of bubbles of gas on the electrodes, deposits of metal on electrodes, or change in color of the solution, etc.
The process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another material by means of electricity is called electroplating.
▪ When an electric current is passed through the copper sulphate solution, the solution dissociates into copper and sulphate ions.
▪ The free copper is drawn to the electrode connected to the negative terminal of the batter and gets deposited on it. ▪ From the other electrode which is a copper plate, an equal amount of copper gets dissolved in the solution.
▪ Thus, the loss of copper from the solution is restored and the process continues.
