## Force

A push or a pull on an object is called force. Force has both magnitude and direction. The SI unit of force is newton. The motion imparted to objects is due to the action of a force.

Forces are due to an Interaction:- At least two objects must interact for a force to come into play. Thus, an interaction of one object with another object results in a force between the two objects. More than one force may act on an object.

#### Types of force

1. Contact force

The forces which act on bodies when they are in physical contact with each other are called the Contact forces. Example – muscular force, friction force.

2. Non- Contact force

The forces experienced by bodies even without being physically touched are called the Non-Contact Forces. Examples – electrostatic force, gravitational force, and magnetic force.

## Pressure

Pressure is defined as the perpendicular force acting per unit area. It can be represented as, pressure = force/area on which it acts.

#### Pressure exerted by liquids and gases

Anything occupying space and has mass exert pressure. Therefore, it is true that liquids and gases exert pressure. Liquids and gases exert pressure on the walls of the container. The pressure exerted by water at the bottom of the container depends on the height of its column. Liquids exert equal pressure at the same depth.

#### Atmospheric Pressure

The envelope of air all around us is known as the atmosphere. The pressure exerted by this air is known as atmospheric pressure. For example, the cardboard remains in position as the force of water acting on the cardboard is balanced by the atmospheric pressure acting on it in the upward direction.
