Introduction

The word ‘Geometry’ is derived from two Latin words, ‘geo’ + ‘metron’ meaning earth & measurement. This implies it is concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, surfaces and solids.

Line segment

Line segment is a straight path with two end points.

Intersecting line

If two distinct line meet or cross at a point they are called intersecting line.

Constructing a Line

Drawing a line segment of 3.9 cm

Step 1: Draw a line l. Mark a point ‘A’ on the line l.

Step 2: Place the pointer of the compass on the zero mark of the ruler. Open it to place the point of pencil up to 3.9 cm.

Step 3: Taking care that the opening of the compass has not changed, place the pointer on A and swing an arc to cut l at B.

Step 4:  We got a portion AB, this is our line segment AB of required length.

Constructing a Copy of Given Segment.

Step 1: Draw a line segment CD of any length.

Step 2: Fix the pointer of compass on C and the pointer of pencil on D. Now, our compass has the length of segment CD. Compass opening is equal to the length of line segment CD.

Step 3: Now, Draw a line l and Mark a point A on the line l. Now, without changing the compasses setting, place the pointer on A.

Step 4 : Swing an arc that cuts l at a point B. AB Thus formed is a copy of CD.

Constructions of Triangles

Constructing a scalene triangle when base, one base angle and the sum of the lengths of other two sides are given.

Construction:

Draw the line segment BC which is our base BC. Now at point B make an angle, say XBC equal to the given angle.

Cut a line segment BD equal to AB + AC from the ray BX.

Join DC and make an angle DCY equal to BDC.

Let CY intersect BX at A

ABC is the required triangle.
