Effect of deforestation on the following:
(a) Wild animals: Deforestation leads to the destruction of the natural habitats of wild animals as trees are the habitats as well as sources of food for the wild animals.
(b) Environment: Deforestation causes an increase in the temperature. It also causes pollution of the environment. Deforestation leads to an increase in the carbon dioxide level and a decrease in the oxygen level. This gives rise to global warming. Deforestation also lowers the level of ground water. Moreover, deforestation decreases the soil fertility and so, increases the chances of natural calamities.
(c) Villages (Rural areas): The reduction in rainfall, decrease in soil fertility, and chances of natural disaster affect the village life.
(d) Cities (Urban areas): Deforestation result in global warming. It also results in the increase in the level of pollution. Hence, deforestation affects the life in cities.
(e) Earth: Deforestation causes a decrease in the fertility of soil. It also changes the physical properties of soil. All these changes result in desertification.
(f) The next generation: Climatic conditions will be adversely affected because of
deforestation. There will be scarcity of food and clean environment. Next generation won’t be able to see most of the animal species due to habitat loss.

(a) Biodiversity refers to the number and variety of various life forms such as plants, animals and micro-organisms in an area. Plants and animals depend on each other for survival. This means that the destruction of either of the two will affect the life of the other. Hence, we need to conserve biodiversity to maintain the balance of nature.

(b) Protected forests are not completely safe for wild animals. This is because people living near the forests use resources from forests to fulfil their own requirements. In this process, wild animals are killed and sold for lucrative amounts of money.

(c) The forests provide food, fodder and other resources to the tribal people. Tribal people also collect wood and herbs from forests.

(d) Causes of deforestation:
(i) Forests are cleared for accommodating expanding urban areas and for fulfilling their everincreasing requirements.
(ii) Forests are destroyed to clear land for crops and cattle grazing.
(iii) Trees are cut down to be used for firewood.
Consequences of deforestation:
 Soil erosion
 Disruption of water cycle
 Loss of biodiversity
 Climate changes due to global warming
 Floods and droughts

(e) A sourcebook which has an international list of all plant and animal species which are endangered, that is, on the verge of extinction is known as the Red data book. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural resources (IUCN) maintains the books and add/ remove the names of the species by conducting a comprehensive survey.

(f) Migration is the movement of an organism or a group of organisms from its natural habitat to another place on a standard basis at a particular time of each and every year. In order to avoid uninhabitable conditions of climate or for the process of breeding, organisms migrate.

6. In order to meet the ever-increasing demand in factories and for shelter,
trees are being continually cut. Is it justified to cut trees for such projects?

It’s not justified to cut trees just to fulfil our needs. Trees are the habitat of many living organisms. They give us oxygen, and maintain the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide as well. They also bind the soil particles. Trees also reduce the chances of natural disasters like floods and droughts. They help conserve our rich biodiversity. The cutting of trees causes an increase in the carbon dioxide (CO2) level, which results in global warming.

7. How can you contribute to the maintenance of green wealth of your
locality? Make a list of actions to be taken by you.

 I can take care of the green cover of my locality by planting more plants in my locality.
 I can motivate the people to plant more trees and take care of the existing trees by creating awareness about the importance of plants.
 I would initiate the proceedings and organize weekly events on the same.
 Creating awareness among the children and youth would be of top priority as they will easily understand the issues that we are facing.
 Planting new trees is as important as looking after the existing ones.
 So, my volunteers and I would water the plants and trees on a regular basis.

8. Explain how deforestation leads to reduced rainfall.

During transpiration, trees give out a huge amount of water in the form of water vapour. The reduction of water vapour affects cloud formation and thus, results in less rainfall.

 Collection and recycling of used paper.
 Using both sides of a paper for writing.
 Spreading awareness about the importance of paper among school children and youth.
 Intelligent and proper use of paper.
