Ans. Every fuel has a particular temperature at which it starts to burn. This temperature is called the ‘flash point’ or kindling temperature of the fuel.

 

  1. (i) What are some common uses of fire?

 

Ans. Some of the common uses of fire are that it is used in cooking, producing electricity and keeping our homes warm during winters.

 

(ii) In what sense is it a “bad master”?

 

Ans. Fire is a “bad master” when it gets out of control as it can cause damage to human lives, property, forests, etc.

Ans. First, take away the fuel. If the fire has no fuel to feed on, no burning can take place. Second, prevent oxygen as no supply of oxygen means no fire. Third, remove the heat as temperature can be brought down below flash point then fuel stops burning. These are the three main ways in which a fire can be controlled or put out are

Ans. A burning candle goes out when you blow on it because you remove the hot air around the flame bringing down its temperature below the flash point, and hence, the candle goes out.

Ans. Spraying water is not a good way of putting out an oil fire because if water is sprayed onto an oil fire, the oil will float to the top of the water and continue to burn. This can be very dangerous because water can flow quickly, carrying the burning oil with it and spreading the fire. In case of an electrical fire as well, the person spraying water might receive an electric shock and be killed.
