The poem, “Dad and the cat and the tree” revolves around its main characters, Dad, a cat and a tree. When Dad finds a cat stuck on a tree, he decides to get it down. Although Mom tells him to be cautious while climbing the tree, he is boasting that it is a cakewalk for a climber like him. But he falls on the ground while climbing. He then comes up with Plan B and Plan C. Read the entire poem to experience a funny and humorous climax.

  1. Why was Dad sure he wouldn’t fall?

Ans. Dad was sure he wouldn’t fall because he thought that he was a good climber.

  1. Which phrase in the poem expresses Dad’s self-confidence best?

Ans. The phrase “Easy as winking to a climber like me” expresses Dad’s self-confidence best. 

  1. Describe Plan A and its consequences.

Ans. According to Plan A, Dad used a ladder to climb the tree and bring the cat back. But, it eventually slipped and he landed on the flower bed.

  1. Plan C was a success. What went wrong then?

Ans. Plan C was a success as Dad was able to climb the tree this time. But, he landed flat right on the cat because of which it yelled and sprang safely on the ground. The only thing that went wrong was that the poor dad was left stuck on the tree now.

  1. The cat was very happy to be on the ground. Pick out the phrase used to express this idea.

Ans. The phrase “So it’s smiling and smirking” expresses the idea that the cat was very happy to be on the ground.

  1. Describe the Cat and Dad situation in the beginning and at the end of the poem.

Ans. In the beginning of the poem, the cat was stuck on the tree and Dad was trying different ways to bring her down; whereas in the end, the cat was happily on the ground and Dad was stuck on the tree.

  1. Why and when did Dad say each of the following?

(i) Fall?

Ans. Dad said “Fall?” in surprise when he was about to climb the tree and his wife told him to be careful and not fall. 

(ii) Never mind

Ans. When he actually slips from the ladder into the flower bed, he says “Never mind” brushing the dirt from his face and clothes.

(iii) Funny joke

Ans. When he was about to execute Plan B and his wife warned him for the second time, he called it a “Funny joke”.

(iv) Rubbish

Ans. When Plan B also failed, her wife told him to stop it, otherwise he would break his neck. He said “Rubbish” and moved ahead to execute Plan C.
