The poem Chivvy talks about how grown-ups keep instructing small kids as to what they should do and what they should not. Grown-ups keep telling them how to eat, how to sit, how to talk, what to say, etc.

The final lines of the poem indicate an irony, as here the grown-ups expect the children to make their own decisions, while all other times they expect the children to listen and follow their instructions blindly.

(i) When is a grown-up likely to say this?

Don’t talk with your mouth full.

 

Ans. A grown-up is likely to say this when children speak while eating food.

 

(ii) When are you likely to be told this?

Say thank you.

 

Ans. We are likely to be told this when somebody offers us something or helps us.

 

(iii) When do you think an adult would say this?

No one thinks you are funny.

 

Ans. An adult would say this when a child feels shy to speak in front of others. 

 

  1. The last two lines of the poem are not prohibitions or instructions. What is the adult now asking the child to do? Do you think the poet is suggesting that this is unreasonable? Why?

 

Ans. Now, the adult is asking the child to think independently and make decisions for themselves. Yes, the poet is suggesting that this is unreasonable because as a child they were supposed to listen to adults and follow their instructions but suddenly they expect them to work and act independently.

Ans. The reason why grown-ups say the kind of things mentioned in the poem is because they are concerned about the child and want them to learn how to behave properly. Yes, to some extent, it is important that they teach children good manners, and how to behave in public so that they don’t adapt ill manners. Adults should also let children act and work independently so that they learn to do things on their own.

 

  1. If you had to make some rules for grown-ups to follow, what would you say? Make at least five such rules. Arrange the lines as in a poem.
