1. Why do we need to separate different components of a mixture? Give
two examples.

Solution:
Some of the components of a mixture may not be useful for us. This is the reason why we need to separate different components of a mixture.
Few examples of separating the various components of a mixture are:
a. While serving tea, the tea leaves are separated from the mixture using a strainer.
b. The stone and other unwanted components are removed from rice or pulses by hand picking.

2. What is winnowing? Where is it used?

Solution:
The process by which lighter components are separated from the heavier components of a mixture with the help of air or wind is known as winnowing.
Framers separate husk from the grains using this process.

3. How will you separate husk or dirt particles from a given sample of
pulses before cooking?

Solution:
Hand picking technique can be used to separate husk or duct particles from a given sample of pulses before cooking. Hand picking is the process of separation of various components of a mixture based on size and colour.

4. What is sieving? Where is it used?

Solution:
The process of separating fine particles from the larger particles with the help of a sieve is called sieving.
Sieving is used in flour mills where impurities like husk and stones are removed from wheat before grinding it.

5. How will you separate sand and water from their mixture?

Solution:
The following two methods can be used to separate sand and water:
(a) Sedimentation and decantation: The mixture of sand and water is kept undisturbed for some time. After some time, sand settles at the bottom of the container because it is heavier and insoluble in water. Now, water is poured into another container carefully to separate it  from sand.
(b) Filtration: The mixture of sand and water is passed through a filter paper (a filter with very fine pores). Sand particles being larger in size do not pass through the filter paper and are retained by the filter paper. Thus, in this way sand gets separated from water.

6. Is it possible to separate sugar mixed with wheat flour? If yes, how will you do it?

Solution:
Yes, it is possible to separate sugar mixed with wheat flour.
Sugar can be separated from wheat flour by sieving. Sugar particles being larger in size do not pass through the sieve and are retained in the sieve whereas wheat flour passes through the sieve.

7. How would you obtain clear water from a sample of muddy water?

Solution:
Filtration technique can be used to obtain clear water from a sample of muddy water. A filter paper is fixed in a funnel and then the mixture is poured onto the filter paper. Mud particles being larger in size do not pass through the filter paper and remain on the filter paper whereas clear water passes through the filter paper.

Solution:
Ice should be added to the lemonade after dissolving sugar.
It is possible to dissolve more sugar in the lemonade if ice is added after dissolving sugar because the solubility of sugar in water decreases as the temperature of water decreases.
