3. How will you prove that air supports burning?

Solution:
The following activity can prove that air supports burning:
 Place two burning candles on a table.
 Cover one candle with an inverted glass tumbler as shown in the figure.
It will be noticed that the candle covered with the glass tumbler blows out after some time whereas the other candle continues to burn.
This happens because there is no air supply inside the glass tumbler. The air initially present in the glass tumbler is used up for burning and that is the reason why the candle does not blow off instantaneously. This shows that air supports burning.

4. How will you show that air is dissolved in water?

Solution:
The following activity can be used to show that air is dissolved in water:
 Take some water in a beaker.
 Heat the beaker by placing on a tripod stand.
 Carefully observe that as the water starts boiling, small bubbles are formed at the inner surface of the beaker.
This shows that air dissolved in water escapes as water is heated.

5. Why does a lump of cotton wool shrink in water?

Solution:
Lumps of cotton wool have air trapped in between them. When these lumps are placed in water, air is replaced with water and the cotton wool also becomes heavy. The removal of air causes a decreases in volume as a result of which the limps of cotton wool shrink in water.
