Question 1:
What changes can you make in your habits to become more environmentfriendly?

 

Solution:
The following changes can be made in our habits to become more environmentally-friendly:
(i) Segregate waste into recyclable and non-recyclable parts.
(ii) Instead of using vehicles walk for nearby places.
(iii) Don’t litter public places.
(iv) Minimize the use of plastics. It used reuse them.
(v) Switch off the lights and fans when not in use.
(vi) Reuse water from washing machines for cleaning purposes.

 

Question 2:
What would be the advantages of exploiting resources with short-term
aims?

 

Solution:
The advantage of exploiting resources with short-term aims would be self-centered satisfaction. It will result in harming the environment and take a toll on nature’s health.

How would these advantages differ from the advantages of using a longterm perspective in managing our resources?

Why do you think there should be equitable distribution of resources?

Natural resources of Earth must be distributed among the people uniformly. By doing this, each one gets his/her share of the resource irrespective of power and wealth. The forces working against an equitable distribution of resources are human greed, corruption and inequality.

Question 1:
Why should we conserve forests and wildlife?

Solution:
We should conserve forest and wildlife because of following reasons:
(i) Forests control flood, purify the air we breathe, prevent soil erosion and maintain its fertility.
(ii) Wildlife is a part of the ecosystem and disturbing their population would affect the food chain.
(iii) Tribal population depends on forests and wildlife in order to conserve their culture and tradition.
(iv) They are responsible for regular cycle of seasons as they maintain ecological balance.

 

Question 2:
Suggest some approaches towards the conservation of forests.

Solution:
Some approaches towards forest conservation are as follows:
(i) More trees should be planted. Rate of forestation must be more than that of
deforestation.
(ii) Operations like improved cutting and selective cutting should be adopted by forest management.
(iii) Forest fires should be prevented.
(iv) Overgrazing should be prohibited.
(v) Forest rules and laws should be strictly enforced.
(vi) Avoid the wastage of timber and fuel wood.

Question 1:
Find out about the traditional systems of water harvesting/management in
your region.

 

Solution:
The traditional systems of water harvesting/management in our region are
(i) Rooftop rainwater harvesting.
(ii) Filter.
(iii) Tanks.
(iv) Surface runoff harvesting.

 

 

Question 2:
Compare the above system with the probable systems in hilly/mountainous
areas or plains or plateau regions.

 

Solution:
In hilly regions, the canal irrigation system called Kulhs is used for water harvesting. In this system, the water flowing through falls, comes to the area located at lower regions through small human made drains. In the plains, the water harvesting structures are crescent-shaped earthen embankments. These are straight, low and concrete. So, the systems like Jhalaras and bewares are used here. In plateau regions, small pits are dug to collect water. Bandharas which are check dams or diversion are built across the rivers.

 

Question 3:
Find out the source of water in your region/locality. Is water from this
source available to all people living in that area?

 

 

Solution:
The source of water in my region is river Narmada and ground water. After being treated, water is supplied to the residents through a water pipeline system.
The water from this source available to all people living in that area.

Question 1:
What changes would you suggest in your home in order to be environmentfriendly?

 

Solution:
I would suggest the following changes my home in order to be environment-friendly:
(i) Use separate bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
(ii) Don’t waste food.
(iii) Follow three R’s Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
(iv) Instead of private vehicles, try to use public vehicles.
(v) TV, fans, lights should be turned off when not in use.
(vi) Use energy efficient electrical appliances.
(vii) Use water and other resources judiciously.

 

Question 2:
Can you suggest some changes in your schools which would make it
environment-friendly?

 

Solution:
Changes that can be undertaken in our schools to make it environment friendly are as follows:
(i) Turn off the tapes when not in use.
(ii) Leaking taps should be repaired to avoid wastage of water.
(iii) Students should bring their food in reusable boxes, not in plastic bags or in aluminum foil.
(iv) Enough trees should be planted in the school.
(v) There should be more windows in classroom for natural light.
(vi) Teachers should educate students about environment conservation.

 

Question 3:
We saw in this chapter that there are four main stakeholders when it comes
to forests and wildlife. Which among these should have the authority to
decide the management of forest produces? Why do you think so?

 

Solution:
The Forest Department of Government should have the authority to decide the management of forest produces because they have sufficient power and resources that can manage the forest resources well. And also they are the caretakers of the forest land and are responsible for any damage to the forest.

 

Question 4:
How can you as an individual contribute or make a difference to the
management of (a) forests and wildlife, (b) water resources and (c) coal and
petroleum?

 

Solution:
(a) As an individual we can contribute the following to conserve forest and wildlife.
(i) Trees should not be cut. If trees are needed to be cut, then plant new trees in their place.
(ii) Use paper efficiently.
(iii) We should protest against the poaching of forest animals.
(iv) Annexation of forest land for our use should be stopped.
(b) As an individual we can contribute the following to conserve water resources.
(i) Taps should be turned off when not in use while brushing, shaving and washing
hands.
(ii) If there is any leakage in water distribution system, then repair it or inform the
concerned agency.
(iii) Rainwater harvesting should be practiced.
(iv) Don’t pollute the water resources.
(c) As an individual we can contribute the following in the management of coal and petroleum.
(i) Use public transport instead of private vehicles. It saves petrol.
(ii) Use CNG or LPG.
(iii) Instead of using heaters wear extra sweater.
(iv) Switch off the vehicle at red light if you have to wait for too long.

 

Question 5:
What can you as an individual do to reduce your consumption of the
various natural resources?

Solution:
Natural resources such as water, forests, coal and petroleum, etc. are important for the survival of human beings. We can reduce the consumption of various natural resources by following ways:
(i) We should avoid the wastage of water.
(ii) We should stop deforestation.
(iii) We should use recyclable paper to reduce the cutting of trees.
(iv) We should not pollute the water bodies.
(v) We should use the devices based on renewable sources of energy like solar cell, solar,heaters, etc.
(vi) We should follow the principle of three R’s Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
(vii) We should practice rainwater harvesting.

List five things you have done over the last one week to −

(a) Conserve our natural resources
(i) Saved electricity by switching off the lights, fans, TV, etc when not in use.

(iii) Took bath with less water than before.
(iv) Threw biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste into separate bins.

(b) Increase the pressure on our natural resources
